What is dry needling?

Dry needling is a treatment performed by a skilled, licensed physical therapist.

An extremely thin needle is placed in the skin to target underlying muscular trigger points to help manage neuromusculoskeletal pain and motor/movement impairments. Dry needling can be performed on and benefitted by anyone from our professional athletes to the general population. We find that our patients looking to recover from weightlifting especially respond to the practice.

So what are we actually targeting? These trigger points are local contractures (tight bands) in a muscle fiber that can disrupt day-to-day living, range of motion, and quality of life. Dry needling can target tight muscles in a way that massage, cupping, and stretching may have a hard time reaching.

When the needle is inserted into the muscle, the bands will relax, causing blood flow to increase, ultimately resulting in an increased recovery rate and a decrease in pain.

What is dry needling used for?

Dry needling can be used for many musculoskeletal issues, including neck, foot, shoulder, heel, hip, and back pain. Research indicates dry needling is both safe and effective for treating and managing pain.

Some benefits of dry needling include:

  • Muscle relaxation

  • Increased blood flow

  • Reduced inflammation

  • Triggers healing response in muscles

  • Improves nerve communication

Dry needling can also activate the release of your body’s natural pain relievers and endorphins.

Does dry needling hurt?

While acupuncture needles go 3-4mm deep into the skin, dry needling is usually deeper because we are not treating a meridian, we are instead targeting specific anatomical and neurological structures like muscles, tendons, ligaments, and nerves.

Because of the type of needle we use and the techniques we employ, discomfort is usually minimal if at all. Additionally, the type of needling technique can be adapted to the patient's comfort.

This is where we can’t stress enough the experience of your doctor and your comfort level with them. Implementing simple self-regulation practices (deep breathing, music) during the process may help the process.

Many hear the word “needle” and want to run the other way. But while dry needling may sound intimidating, it is a safe, minimally discomforting, and often effective technique for patients with certain musculoskeletal imbalances and discomfort.
